When Butterflies Attack

12 February 2010

We’re in the jungle now, anything can happen here.

Iguazu Falls is the real topic of this post, but don’t worry, there are butterflies involved. The falls are an amazing thing to see. There are actually a series of falls stretching over a mile long, with the most dramatic point, and longest drop being the “Devil’s Throat”. That section is a circular shape and generates so much mist and water spray that you can’t see the bottom, even though they built a walkway over the river right up to the edge.

The other parts of the falls provided some amazing scenery, which we did a poor job of capturing on camera. There are a series of trails in the national park that provide views from the top and bottom of most sections. We even decided to get the full experience and took the boat ride at the bottom. They drove us right up to the rocks under the water fall and the whole boat got dumped on, it was like getting a bucket of water thrown in your face.

If waterfalls aren’t good enough, this one also happens to be in the jungle. That means it comes complete with a bunch of huge spiders and other fun animals. We saw several types of birds, some large lizards (iguanas I think), turtles, a river otter, and some coati. There were also rumors that jaguars hang out there at night. Oh, and of course there were also butterflies. Maybe ‘attack’ is a strong word, but ‘swarm’ is probably accurate, and that can be scary too. We saw around 10 different types with some crazy patterns. They were all over the park, yet still elusive. Many photographers were seen chasing them down, having trouble getting the perfect shot. They didn’t realize there were a few of the sneaky creatures hiding from the camera and resting on backpacks. We even saw a lizard trying, but failing, to capture a butterfly for lunch. It got away just in time, and lived to fight another day.
