Back in the States

Our return to the new world went pretty smooth, Canadian customs and immigration took no time at all and they didn’t even stamp our passports. It actually took longer waiting at Hertz for our car than it did to make our way through the airport. The drive to Detroit was also quite pleasant, we were treated to some nice fall colors which looked great in the warm afternoon sun. It was also great to be back in a car and be able to sing along with the music. We had …

Land of Kings

Although Rajasthan is not home to the Taj Mahal, it does contain the Pink City, the Blue City, and numerous palaces and temples. We opted for a ten day private car tour of the area. Fittingly our driver’s name was Raj!
The first stop was Agra. We didn’t head to the main attraction right away but instead went to Agra Fort. From the outside it looked like we’d be there all day, it is massive. However, once inside we learned that it is still used by the military so we …

The Place To Be

At least that’s what the license plates say in the state of Victoria. We officially set foot on our 4th continent since January by landing in Melbourne and we hit the road yet again. The three of us didn’t have the same flight so Beth had a little extra time in Melbourne to check out the shopping center. She found Woolworth’s and Target!
We headed for the Great Ocean Road and Apollo Bay. The first day was spent mostly in the twilight and dark which made driving the unfamiliar twisty …

Living in a Van, Down by the River

We’re back on the road after a week on the beach. This time we get to drive. On the wrong side of the road even. Apparently, the thing to do in New Zealand is to rent a camper and drive around the islands. Everyone we had talked to along the way had recommended that plan, so we went along with it too. The campers here are known as campervans, although the one we got was just a van. The company we ended up with was named, appropriately enough, Hippie Camper. …

Beginning the Journey South

We left Santa Cruz today and started heading south. Eventually we’ll get all the way to Tierra del Fuego, but for now it’s only going to be eight hours down the road to Oceanside, CA. It’s been a busy couple weeks since we’ve been back from Christmas, here’s what happened over the past week.
New Years Eve
A bunch of friends came up from Monterey to hang out down town for the evening. Nothing too crazy happened, but we did get to see the illegal fireworks at midnight by the clock tower. …

Field Trip to Oakland

I spent some of time at the corner of 98th and Bancroft Avenues today. More time than I would have liked, there’s a school and a park there, but still not a fun place to hang out. I did get to block traffic for a few hours and the tow truck driver warned me that it was a bad neighborhood, but more on that later.
I rode my motorcycle to Oakland this morning and bought a truck. I’m still not sure if this was a good idea, but I found a …

Bad News Bears

We are expecting some inconveniences and problems while traveling, but didn’t realized the trouble would start so soon.
After landing at SFO, we get to our car at the airport parking lot and the coolant light comes on as soon as the car starts. A quick look under the hood reveals the fluid level is quite low…that explains the light. It’s 12:30pm so we just start driving anyway, stopping at a few gas stations to look for more antifreeze. No luck since they are either closed or don’t have the …
